Taking a Break

After my last blog post, I know you probably think I’m all work and no play, so here’s proof that I do take some down time. I have to admit, this musical interlude came as a surprise to me. John is a very good guitarist but hasn’t been playing in a while (long enough to have lost his callouses, poor guy). Anyway, Christmas of  ’09 I told him I’d give him a music stand if he picked one out. He never got around to it . . . until last week. He brought it home, pulled out his guitar, and started playing. I mentioned feeling sad that  Rheumatoid Arthritis put a stop to my (pretty amateurish) guitar playing and that I gave my guitar away. He pointed out that I gave away an older guitar and still had one downstairs. “Huh?” I said. I really didn’t believe him until he brought the guitar upstairs. I pulled it out and discovered that, indeed, the middle finger on my left hand just can’t make the D chord, for example. But John showed me a new (to me) way to make the D chord and I was off and running. I dug out my old guitar books (Very old: Bob Dylan. Joan Baez. Paul Simon) and played just long enough to have a good time and short enough to avoid blisters. Perfect!

What have you done for fun lately?

I love seeing this! I know how much you love music and it warms my heart to think of you and John “jamming” together. So cool that he remembered about your guitar and was able to help you with some chords. Loved reading this post!

Great photo Diane! I envy you for being able to read music! What have I done for fun lately? Hmmmmm……I will have to look up the definition of fun.

Diane, I didn’t know you and John played guitar!…it doesn’t surprise me tho since you are both such creative people. Music is a wonderful way to take ‘time out’ from our hectic schedules and it seems to refresh the soul, doesn’t it?…playing piano is a way for me to sit back, have fun and relax.

Caitlin, you’re a sweetie. We’re planning to “jam” again tonight and dust off “Me and Bobbie Magee” which we used to play back when we were courting.

Deb, I just read the chords. I know HOW to read music, but I can’t sight sing, which is why I’m no longer in a chorus. My Virginia interfaith choir didn’t use music, and I miss that.

Margo, I would so love to know how to play the piano!! I took lessons as an adult but discovered a decided lack of talent.

Great photo. Thanks for sharing, Diane.

Let’s see. What do I do for fun? Reading. Corny, I know 🙂 I also love to scrapbook. It’s very relaxing.

I’d love to play guitar but Cerebral Palsy and Vasculitis stop me. It looks like fun!
