Story Weekend: Childhood Memories

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-image-child-blows-dandelion-seeds-image2351361I bet that you have something from your childhood that you never will forget. I hope you’ll share on of your favorite childhood memories with us.

If you’re new to Story Weekend, here’s how it works: I pick a theme and you share something from your life that relates to that theme, however you interpret it. Thanks to all of you who’ve contributed. As always, there are a few “rules”:

▪ The story must be true

▪ Try to keep it under 100 words. Embrace the challenge! That’s about six or seven lines in the comment form. I want others to read your story, and most people tend to skip if it’s too long. I know how tough it is to “write tight” but I hope you’ll accept this as a challenge.

Our Griswald vacation to Disney. We didn’t make it 15 miles from home and 5am my dad had to stop to fix a blown tire. Searching for our car in the pouring rain in the dark in the Disney parking lot, my mom flagged down help. We get to car, batteries dead. Finally get to hotel after my dad got the car jumped, in my brothers bed there was a HUGE palmetto bug. My dad brought it to front desk, he was given a new key. Gets to room, tries the lock, a woman screams. Finally get a room, next to the ice machine. The machine was dispensing ice all night. Rest of the trip uneventful until the ride home, listening to 1010wins we learn of a dead body found a the town motel.

When I was growing up, my grandparents took care of me during the day because my parents worked. I would take the bus in the morning and dad picked me up. My mom didn’t drive at that time. I will never forget the days mY grandmother took me to downtown Washington,D.C. to see a movie. What was special about these movies was the stage show that followed the movie. Spectacular for my young age. After the movie we traveled back to my grandmother’s in Silver Spring , Md. By Bus. Loved those days with my grandmother!

One of my favorite memories was a summer my sister and I spent with our grandparents in Ohio. We lived in Michigan and didn’t get to see them often. All of our cousins lived nearby and we loved seeing them. One of our favorite tImes was going to two different county fairs. Grandma gave all the cousins some money for rides and off we went! We spent the whole day. I loved it. ,

It wasn’t a tricycle. Finally my mother let me have a real, grownup-sized bike, no handbrakes, exposed chain and up to its long-running stint as a horse. I rode it within an inch of its life for many years until late teenage took over. Then it was farmed out to someone else’s kid. But two years ago in Walmart there it was. Same colors, same lo-tech. At 67 all my childhood fantasies came back and I spent $60 on a brand new old memory. It lives in my garage until I get up the courage to ride it.

They were the coolest shoes my 8 year old eyes had ever seen. At $35 my parents refused to buy them. I saved every dime I found/earned/begged for until I had enough. I bought the Navy blue ones. I wore them once. My parents never said “I told you so” or lectured me about it; it was my lesson to learn. I never forgot the way I felt every time I looked at those shoes and thought about wearing them, but did not. To this day, I always own only one or two pairs of shoes at a time, and when I buy shoes…they’re always practical.
