Story Weekend: Lake

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photography-north-carolina-mountain-lake-dock-image30059227Do you have a lake story? Please share it with us!

If you’re new to Story Weekend, here’s how it works: I pick a theme and you share something from your life that relates to that theme, however you interpret it. Thanks to all of you who’ve contributed. As always, there are a few “rules”:

▪ The story must be true

▪ Try to keep it under 100 words. Embrace the challenge! That’s about six or seven lines in the comment form. I want others to read your story, and most people tend to skip if it’s too long. I know how tough it is to “write tight” but I hope you’ll accept this as a challenge.

It is still dark and the birds are just waking up. The smell of coffee pushes me out of the bed. Sitting on the porch is my dad. Everyone else is still asleep. As the birds welcome the morning, my dad tells me the name of the bird responsible for each song. We jump in the truck and drive to the water. We check the poles we left baited out overnight. The sun begins it’s climb up the sky. Sometimes we talk, but sometimes we just sit there listening to the morning. .

Dad and Mom worked hard to build the lake house into a place that we could enjoy. We have brought our children out here and now they bring theirs. Dad is gone now, but I know he is there still. Every morning I get up and make the coffee and sit out on the porch and visit with my dad. We listen to the birds as they begin the day. Some are not able to enjoy the lake anymore as they miss Dad too much. It is a comfort to me, because I know he is with me.

Cindy, congrats on being the only person this week brave enough to tiptoe into the water! I forgot to announce Story Weekend on Facebook and now I see that’s a necessity. Thank for sharing your lake-and-Dad story.
