Story Weekend: Love Notes

In honor of Valentine’s Day, please share with us the best love note that you have ever received.http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-image-love-note-cup-coffee-image7964056

If you’re new to Story Weekend, here’s how it works: I pick a theme and you share something from your life that relates to that theme, however you interpret it. Thanks to all of you who’ve contributed. As always, there are a few “rules”:

▪ The story must be true

▪ Try to keep it under 100 words. Embrace the challenge! That’s about six or seven lines in the comment form. I want others to read your story, and most people tend to skip if it’s too long. I know how tough it is to “write tight” but I hope you’ll accept this as a challenge.

    Just this morning – not a note – but. . .

I am an early riser. Hubby not so much. I am sitting here at my computer in my old, pink bathrobe that I wear every morning while reading the paper because once newspaper ink becomes imbedded in it – stained forever. My husband of 57 years walks across the hallway from the bedroom, plants a kiss and says “love to you on this Valentine’s Day” and heads out the door to walk the dog in 19 degree weather. Love comes in all shapes, sizes and mannerisms.

Husband David and son, Andrew set off at 8 am this morning to drive from Cheshire to London to watch the Six Nations Rugby union match between England and Italy. I didn’t really expect anything for Valentine’s Day as we don’t usually bother! (Married almost 48 years). Got a phone call asking if I had let the dog out. Strange? but when I opened the door there was a nice box of chocolates and a bottle of bubbly!! So very unexpected but lovely! So then I went out to buy some of his favourite beer for when he gets home later. England winning 15 to 5 at the moment!

A carefully folded note in service station windshield wiping paper from my 7 year old grandson. He wrote, “To Mimi” “From Kai”.. when I opened it he had drawn a stick figure of a granny like woman and the stick figure of a little boy holding hands. He’d written, “Dear Mimi, You Are The Best Grandma for me” and as a sort of after thought, he added, “and Lia too.” Then signed it, “Love, Kai.”

In the 40 years that we have been married, Mike only wrote to me in the beginning of our marriage when he was in the Army. He used the most beautiful words of love. You would never hear him say those words out loud. He is not the most romantic man alive. But he praises me to all his friends. He tells them about the wonderful woman he married. I know he loves me. Sometimes he does surprise me by doing something I don’t expect.

We have never really celebrated Valentine’s Day. He worked as a truck driver most of our marriage. He never really knew what day it was. There were many missed birthdays, Valentine’s Days and anniversaries. He is my best friend and I expect that he will never know how much I love him.
