Story Weekend: Unforgettable Concerts

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-images-people-silhouettes-festive-atmosphere-image28637099It seems like everyone comes home with a story after attending a great concert. Do you have an unforgettable concert story?

If you’re new to Story Weekend, here’s how it works: I pick a theme and you share something from your life that relates to that theme, however you interpret it. Thanks to all of you who’ve contributed. As always, there are a few “rules”:

▪ The story must be true

▪ Try to keep it under 100 words. Embrace the challenge! That’s about six or seven lines in the comment form. I want others to read your story, and most people tend to skip if it’s too long. I know how tough it is to “write tight” but I hope you’ll accept this as a challenge.

When I was 20 my friend and I bought ourselves tickets to see Tim McGraw and Faith Hill in concert. Almost $150 each but well worth it!! We drove 9 hours to Toronto, stayed with her step dad, and our second day there it was concert day. My friend was there mainly for Faith, and I was there for Tim. Well Faith was awesome but it was the longest hour or so if my life til Tim came out! And when he did I cried of happiness through almost every song. AMAZING show!! I still remember his opening song was that old one that’s by someone else (not sure who?) about some people call me a space cowboy, etc.. awesome with a country twist! And his and Faith’s duet of Chasing Cars… really should have made it to the radio!! Well over 100 words now SORRY!!

Wow, Tim McGraw sang about the “pompitous of love”? I never did understand that song, but I love it when a musician steps out of the box.

the Beatles at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965. Everything else pales in comparison.

My most memorable concert was one where I played flute and piccolo at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Our local community orchestra, the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra (Bel Air, MD), and local choruses were invited to play. Our orchestra and local choruses traveled in three busses. Two of them ran into each other on 95N. Of course we were delayed by hours. We barely made it in time with bruised hands, faces, and limbs. We played with the St. Patrick’s choir, a choir visiting from Poland, and a local Polish choir. Beautiful! We were invited two years later to play at Carnegie Hall, but that’s another story.

I went to see Peter, Paul & Mary at the University of Wisconsin in April of 1968. Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated three days before the concert. Both Peter and Paul had shaved their beards as a way to mourn the great civil rights leader. The concert was a poignant tribute to a great man and underscored the importance of the civil rights movement.

My daughter has always been a huge fan of a singer named Ryan Star. He’s not hugely famous, but she loves him. When she was 8 I took her to see him. We got there early and got in the front row, sat through 2 opening acts that made me question why I brought my 8yo to a rock concert, and then he came out and sang. My daughter sang along to every word and half way through the show he leaned down and pulled her up on the stage and asked her to sing a duet with him. She’s 11 now and it is something she still continues to talk about to this day. I was also one proud mama. There is a video of it on YouTube.

This is so easy. In 2004 I went to see Barry Manilow and I got to meet him before the concert. He was so gracious and he let me give him a great big hug! I am a “fanilow” and I will never forget that evening. We sat in the front row and, of course, the concert was awesome. I have been to 20 of his concerts and they are all different and every one left me feeling joyous. The concert in 2004 was one of the highlights of my life!

A serenade by Chris Isaak after his concert while signing my tee-shirt. My favorite song “I’m not waiting” id not make it to the concert playlist. So I got the next best thing… a serenade right in the middle of the Beacon Theatre in NYC! Love him!!!
