Story Weekend: Sunglasses

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photos-young-woman-pink-dress-summer-sunglasses-retro-poster-ba-beautiful-background-image32421158I’ll kick off this weekend’s topic with my own sunglasses story.

If  you’re new to Story Weekend, here’s how it works: I pick a theme and you share something from your life that relates to that theme, however you interpret it. Thanks to all of you who’ve contributed. As always, there are a few “rules”:

▪   The story must be true

▪   Try to keep it under 100 words. Embrace the challenge! That’s about six or seven lines in the comment form. I want others to read your story, and most people tend to skip if it’s too long. I know how tough it is to “write tight” but I hope you’ll accept this as a challenge. Happy writing!

My friend Liz stopped by my beach condo for a visit. We chatted a while and then she left. A moment later, she was back, saying she’d forgotten her sunglasses. We searched high and low in my condo. We found MY sunglasses on the coffee table, but hers were nowhere to be found. I suggested she’d left them in her car, but she was adamant she’d had them when she came in the condo. She finally left, squinting against the sunlight, and I promised I’d keep looking. I eventually did find them–on my own head.

Diane, your story did finally show up. Ignore my comment.

Diane, for some reason I don’t see your story. I don’t necessarily have a story about sunglasses but I lump them into the same category as socks that disappear in the washer/dryer.

I try to keep four pair at all times. One pair in each vehicle, one pair in the house for a quick grab when going outside and a pair in my purse for riding in a friend’s or other family member’s vehicle. I’m now down to two pair for the umpteenth time this year. They just disappear, never to be seen again. Maybe I should buy some stock in a company that manufactures them.

Martha, when you mentioned socks, I thought the following paragraph was about socks and was scratching my head over why you needed a pair for riding in a friend’s car, etc. Too me a minute to get it!

Oh my word. I can certainly see why you thought that. That’s one of the disadvantages of editing ones’ own work. I knew what I meant and expected that everyone else would too. Thanks, and my apologies. Maybe it brought a smile.

My son Nicholas loved to wear sunglasses as a little toddler. He couldn’t say many words yet but everytime I put his sunglasses on him he would say “dude” because that’s what he called them. I have so many pictures of him in his little denim hat and his ” dudes”. To this say he loves to wear them but at 18 he no longer calls them dudes.

I have a fetish. A sunglasses fetish. I need a new pair every summer. At least one. The funkier the better. My favorite pair is black and white polka dot with fluorescent pink trim, so I have two of the exact same glasses, in case one gets lost, broken, or lands atop Diane’s head. My biggest sunglasses complaint is that I can only wear one pair at a time.

    lol. Fun!

In “my other life” before I retired I worked for, partnered in and then owned a personnel office (placement agency). A number of my applicants I sent out for interviews were short and so the visor in their cars were no protection against the sun. Neither wore SUNGLASSES. So jobs could not be east of their homes in the morning, thus west in the evening because they were unable to see against the sun’s glare.

      That is insane!

    Hi Diane,
When I was younger I use to just buy sunglasses from the $$ store or walmart. I was never given a prescription pair until recently. I now find it annoying having to swich back and forth between regular glasses and sunglasses. I have yet to test them in a car because both pairs are a strong prescription and have something called prisms in it because the dr is a neuro- eye dr.

    • Diane Chamberlain on April 14, 2014 at 2:21 pm

Ugh, this sounds like a hassle, Krystal. So sorry.

I used to spend the $$$ for prescription sunglasses and I was always hunting for them. Now I just buy multiples of the kind that fit over regular glasses. I scatter them around the house, in the car, wherever. Never have to hunt for a pair and they work just fine.

    • Diane Chamberlain on April 14, 2014 at 2:22 pm

Me too, Margaret! I used to have to hunt for sunglasses that fit over my regular glasses, but now they make them and are easy to find. Love them.

A few years back (alright 10 years) I had cataract surgery. I left the hospital with the worst of my nightmares, a pair of little old lady wrap-arounds. While I have always hated them as a sign of aging, I had to keep them on because the glare was too much for my newly implanted eye. After I had the second surgery (and the gift of a second pair) the same gut reaction occurred. I wasn’t gonna be a little old lady. Since then I have made it my mission in life always to have nice pairs of prescription sunglasses around, and not to lose them. I refuse to be a little old lady with wrap-around sunglasses.

    • Diane Chamberlain on April 14, 2014 at 2:23 pm

uh oh. Little old lady here!

      • Christina Wible on April 14, 2014 at 2:56 pm

Well, I don’t discount them if you have an eye condition that requires them. Only if you wear them because you think they are “cool.”

    Diane,
It is kinda of a hassle. I wish I could of gotten those really cool ones that when you go in the sun they turn dark and then when your inside they go back to a normal eyeglasses. A few co-workers have those but I kinda of like mine because there an expensive pair there Maui Jims and they make me look cool LOL.

I bought a really nice pair of purple sunglasses in the sale for my holiday last year. On the first day of the holiday I was reading by the pool when my cousin asked me to put some sun lotion on her back. So I took off my sunglasses, put them to one side, then picked up the sun cream, shifted over to rub the cream onto her back… and heard a crack. Yup. I sat on my sunglasses. For the next 2 weeks I had to wear a pair of purple “Ray Bans” that I bought on the market, that creaked like a door that needed oiling every time I put them on.

This is why I will never buy designer sunglasses. I have a big butt and a very short memory.

    lol, Melanie!

I got my first pair of cheapo sunglasses when I was in middle school. I wanted them only to look like my stylish, soon to be a doctor, older cousin, they did not protect my eyes from scorching sun, but I felt cool!!!!! I looked stylish, (at least in my head) by wearing them. After that, having a pair of sun glasses was “my thing”. My coolest and best surprise was when I got my first pair of Rayban’s as a gift from my cousin years later……She knew I was imitating her.

Hi – I have to wear prescription glasses, and when I got the last pair, I was offered Reactions® lenses free of charge It was great never having to worry about the intermittent sun here in the UK, Sad ly I’ve had to replace them – but without the Reactions lenses – back to squinting in the sun I guess.

I walked into the public library and went straight to the computer to look up books I had on my list to check out. I had just purchased a new pair of black sunglasses that I didn’t want to lose so I put the sunglasses on my head. A lady walked up to me and said her black sunglasses are prescription sunglasses and she spent a lot of money on them. Before I could reply the librarian behind the desk told the lady that her black sunglasses were on the counter where she left them. I was going to let her have my sunglasses that I paid $1.00 for but the lady had stormed away. I didn’t realize my sunglasses looked that expensive and just smiled big!

Hairbands are a funny thing – sometimes they look mumsy, weird, cover a bad hair day or make you look hippie and chic….the weird thing is that one day they look great and the next – you look in the mirror and shake your head in despair!
My SUNGLASSSES however are just the perfect accessory to my head and hair – whatever it may be doing.
I don’t know what their secret is – but it’s magic.
Even on the darkest, stormiest days I find myself wondering if I can still get away with wearing them!
