Story Weekend: Your Favorite Place (and another Giveaway!)

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-welcome-image11580380I think every one of us has a favorite place. A chair by the sunny living room window. Flying in a glider above the sea. Paris! Tell us the story of your favorite place.

Monday morning 10am EST, I’ll use my trusty Random Number Generator to pick a commenter to win an audio book version of The Escape Artist.

If  you’re new to Story Weekend, here’s how it works: I pick a theme and you share something from your life that relates to that theme, however you interpret it. Thanks to all of you who’ve been contributing. As always, there are a few “rules”:

▪   The story must be true

▪   Try to keep it under 100 words. Embrace the challenge! That’s about six or seven lines in the comment form. I want others to read your story, and most people tend to skip if it’s too long. I know how tough it is to “write tight” but I hope you’ll accept this as a challenge. Happy writing!

My favorite place is in the bathtub with a good book (of course one of Diane`s) and soft music playing. I don’t need to worry about not having enough money or enough vacation time. I can go wherever the book takes me and leave behind all my work stresses behind. I can stay there as long as I want and get lost in my fantasies or dreams. The book I choose can be a mystery or romance or self healing. My choices are endless and each book takes me on a new journey. Through my bath I can travel the world and learn about anything I want. I know not everyone will agree that this is the best place but for me it is.

The bathtub is also one of my favorite places. I have read entire books in the bathtub before.

My favorite place is my camper. It is the place I relax and get away from everyday life. Of course, I will have a book with me…or two or three…depending on how long I will be away….always one of Diane’s if I have one I haven’t read yet and also something scary like a good murder mystery. The solitude of the camper being in the woods and seeing the beautiful trees, lake, wildlife is just what I need to de-stress.

My very favorite place is to be is on Topsail Beach at dawn.
I love the feeling of peace as the sun comes up over the ocean, with my mug coffee and my dog, Sophee.
There is no better feeling! 🙂 AHHHH….

My parents own a unit in Amagansett, NY, that they rent out. We try to go twice a year, in the off season, so that it doesn’t impact their rental income. We generally have to bundle up, but it is worth it to have the beach to ourselves. During the day, my husband and daughter will play in the waves, despite the cold water. In the evening, there is nothing like drinking a glass of wine or cup of coffee while watching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean.

I am very fortunate to live nextdoor to my parents. They have a pool and I love being at the pool and reading a good book. It is such a relaxing place to be and I never know who will show up. I have off all summer, so I enjoy every minute that I can because I know that the days of summer pass by so quickly. Before my daughter was born I would spend several hours a day at the pool. I would also read more than one book a day while laying on a raft and enjoying my time alone or with friends.

I have severe M.E/CFS and I am housebound, but once a year we go to Llandudno in North Wales to a rented cottage which overlooks the estuary and I really enjoy the views from the window, watching the boats go sailing by,men fishing, people dog walking and we have seen such beautiful sunsets which are breathtaking. While I am enjoying the views my husband takes our dog for walks along the beach, and of course I always have a book or two to enjoy as well.

My favorite place is Jekyll Island, Georgia with its miles of deserted beaches and undeveloped area…actually a state owned park protected from development. You can walk for hours and not see another soul, or ride bikes along the miles of bicycle paths through marsh and forest and along the coast – the best place to unwind and appreciate life. We ignore the water park and the 5 star hotel and the rustic campground and stay in our favorite hotel right on the beach where we can enjoy the sunrise over the ocean from our balcony or walk at dawn and find great shells. Each trip we make from Florida to anywhere includes a stop at this wonderful peaceful island, and I look forward to being there again in August. AAhhhhh.

I love all these stories of the beach and country but, although I live in the country, my favorite place is in the heart of New York City. Almost 20 years ago now I found Chelsea Square. A green oasis surrounded (mostly) by the late 19th century brick buildings of The General Theological Seminary, it has its own microclimate formed by huge elm trees and dominated by the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. Between 9th and 10th avenues and 20th and 21st streets (entrance on 21st) it is open to the public most days. If I’m in NYC I am there.

I am in my favorite place right now. I’m lying on the bed in my bedroom under the gray afghan my mother made. Somtetimes I have a stack of books and magazines here with me, someitimes I write or do crituques here, I research literary agents on my computer, play games on my iPhone or make phone calls.Once I’m snuggled under this afghan, it takes a great amount of self discipline to get out from under and do laundry, cook dinner, or walk on my treadmill. I’m working up to that treadmill thing as I write this.

My favorite place to read is on my front porch swing. I watch the hummingbirds, have a nice cold diet pepsi and read for hours! Whether there is a nice breeze blowing or a light rain falling on the roof doesn’t mater because I am relaxed and letting the story take me away!

As a mother of two small kids, my favorite place is anywhere I can sit and read by myself with a good cup of coffee or a latte. I also love it when I’m at a bookstore or library by myself and can browse at my leisure.

When my Mum-in-Law died we couldn’t find a home for her recliner chair so we kept it. Now my favourite place is that chair by the window overlooking my beloved little garden. Each season I admire my flowers and plants and think how I can make the planting prettier. My husband has made me a special seat in my garden which I love too.

My favorite place is in my backyard, sitting by the pool and watching the sunset. It is so peaceful sitting there surrounded by flowers and listening to the waterfall on the pool. It is an awesome way to unwind at the end of the day. It is also a great place to read!

I am out of the majority here. I do not have any means to go camping or walk along a beach(actually I hate camping) my favourite place actually is the gazebo at the park about 5 min walk from my house, actually that whole park in general. I love just laying under the gazebo sometimes other people are there and I have to remind myself to not sing out loud if I’ve got some kind of music player on me. But before they put this protective blue carpeting down and it was just grass and sand by the swing,I wrote my first song there. So sitting on the swing either trying to think or just trying not to think. (If that makes sense) is my favourite place. So the swing at the park and the gazebo are my favourite places. But if I do have to be home. I love sitting on the couch and reading for hours or just up in the computer room writing my hearts content is what I really love. Like ever since I got on the computer tonight maybe 9pm til now 12;20 I”ve been writing. No not a book just thoughts on somethings but honestly thats just my fave thing of all.

Laurie is our winner of The Escape Artist! Thanks for contributing, everyone. I’m struck by how many of us have favorite places in our own backyards. Lucky us!
