Searching for Shark Teeth

Okay, so this ocean pic is mine. You can tell by how crooked it is, if nothing else. Doesn’t matter. I love this morning view from our deck, where I’ve set up my computer to work. The other thing I love is looking for sharks’ teeth. When we started coming to Topsail Island a few years ago, everyone told us you could find ten-million-year-old fossilized shark teeth all up and down the beach, so we started searching. We never found a thing until this trip. John found a half inch triangular tooth and I found this black beauty. I was so excited!

So today I was walking through the shallow water searching for more teeth when I started chatting with a woman who was going my way. From her deep tan, I knew she spent a lot of time on the beach. (My legs, on the other hand are white as snow and I’m trying hard not to care). I mentioned to her that I found a shark’s tooth yesterday and she said “I’ve only found about 500 this trip.” I thought I must have misunderstood her and asked her to repeat herself. “Yeah, usually I find 1500-2000 when we’re down here for the week, but there’s hardly any now. Maybe because of the beach renourishment.”

Well, I was staggered! She’s a shark tooth finding machine.

She gave me some tips: search the beach by the Operation Bumblebee tower at low tide and dig holes at the water’s edge with your toes and there they will be. I’ll believe it when I see it. Meanwhile I’m going to treasure my shiny black ten-million-year-old tooth. It may be the only one I ever find.

Thanks, Diane. I found another today. It’s itty bitty, the size of a lentil, but i’ll treasure it anyway!

Diane, I love your photo of the ocean! Beautiful!…and also beautiful is the magnificent shark’s tooth…what a stunning necklace it would make, or even mounted behind glass as a work of art for your wall…how lucky you were to find such an excellent speciman and in perfect condition!
So happy you and John are enjoying your time away at the beach…you deserve it. (-O:
